We’ve already written about some of the routine monthly maintenance tasks that should be performed on your garage door. Now let’s visit the regular safety tests you should perform on your garage door opener.
The first is to close the garage door and then interrupt the safety sensors, or photo eyes. The safety sensors shine an infrared beam across the opening near the bottom of the door. If that beam in interrupted while the door is closing, the opener will stop, reverse and return the door to the open position. Obviously, this is to protect whatever is blocking the beam from being squashed by the closing door. To test the safety sensors, stand inside the garage away from the door. Operate the garage door opener using a remote or the wall station. As the door is closing, wave an object between the photo eyes. The door opener should immediately stop, reverse and return the garage door to the open position. If the door fails to stop, your door needs to be serviced by a qualified technician.
